Acne
Acne can impact a person’s self-esteem exponentially which may affect their relationships, career and everyday life. The treatment of acne requires a long-term commitment from the patient and treatment provider. Results often take time and consistency with lifestyle, in clinic treatments and at home products.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is due to a blockage of a sebaceous gland within in the skin, causing an inflammatory response. This results in comedones (blackheads or whiteheads), pustules, papules and cysts and may cause scarring. It commonly affects the face but can also be present on the neck, chest and back. Acne is complex and can be present due to a multitude of factors. The severity of acne is graded based on the number and type of lesions on the skin.

How Acne Progresses:
Stage 1
Androgenic hormones determine the amount of sebum or oil produced in the sebaceous gland. The sebum binds dead skin cells and other matter causing a blockage and a perfect environment for bacteria.
Stage 2
P.acnes Bacteria colonises and initiates the inflammatory response in the skin.
Stage 3
Skin cell turn over occurs on the surface of the skin and within the follicle, further adds to congestion.
Acne Can Be Triggered By:
-
Hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome through increased androgen production stimulating sebum production.
-
Increased release of androgens from the adrenal glands during stress
-
Medications such as steroids, hormones and anticonvulsant medication
-
Lifestyle factors such as highly inflammatory diet or stress resulting in excess insulin release contributing to (not causing) acne.
-
Some oily and cream-based products can promote the plugging on pilosebaceous units, causing comedone formation.
-
Heat, friction and trauma to the skin can also exacerbate acne.
Our Approach
When treating acne, all stages and triggers of acne must be treated to ensure long term results. This often means we opt to create a multi-modality treatment plan.
Every new patient of Southern Skin Clinic requires a full cosmetic consultation that includes clinical photography and skin and medical assessment based on your concern and expectation. Your current skin care will be reviewed and your practitioner will tailor a treatment and at home care plan that is specific to you. If necessary, Dr Khossousi may prescribe prescription medication.
