IPL or Intense Pulsed Light photo rejuvenation utilises light based energy to target undesirable pigmentation and small blood vessels that may cause facial redness. IPL can be used to treat sun damage, age spots, freckles, generalised redness and fine lines.
As we age, we are exposed to more and more environmental factors, and may start to notice more pigmentation or small vessels on the face and body. These factors can be sun exposure, extreme temperatures, chemicals or trauma.
IPL uses light therapy to penetrate through the surface of the skin. This light is absorbed by melanin in the pigmented spots and oxyhemoglobin in the small vessels. This technology is also called selective photothermolysis, meaning the light targets the capillary or pigmented spot without damaging the surrounding skin.
When treating pigmentation, the heat from the light works to break up the pigment into smaller particles. The body then carries these small fragments to the skins surface where they will appear as scabs or crusts and will fall off in 1-2 weeks, fading the original pigmented spot. IPL’s effect on small blood vessels is similar to this. The light works to irritate and collapse the vein and broken capillaries, minimizing its effect on the surrounding skin. We can also use specific waves of light to treat active acne by targeting the acne causing bacteria to reduce active infection.

FAQ'S
Every new client of Southern Skin Clinic will require a full cosmetic consultation. This consultation will include clinical photography, skin assessment and facial assessment based on your concerns and expectations. Dr Ali and Nurse Tess will then tailor a treatment plan that is specific to you.

If IPL is deemed suitable, a test patch will be performed. This assures the correct settings are used to achieve the best result whilst mitigating risk. If there are no adverse reactions to the test patch we can book for the whole treatment area.

Prior to treatment your skin will be cleansed and protective eyewear will be applied. The treatment consists of bright flashes of light passing over the skin and may feel some minimal discomfort. The sensation may feel like a quick hot snap of an elastic band. Once treatment is complete soothing aftercare products will be applied.
